This one-liner and a quote from Publilius can be used for church councils: 1 - NINE OUT OF TEN DOCTORS: One-Liner The New England Journal of Medicine reports that nine out of 10 doctors agree that one out of 10 doctors is an idiot. SOURCE: Unknown COMMENT: Not quite the attitude that we want on the church council. 2 - PLANS NEED OPTIONS: Quote Any plan is bad which is incapable of modification. SOURCE: Syrus, Publilius (Latin writer; 46-100 B.C.) COMMENT: We don't know everything. God often is adding his own tweaks or absolute reversals of the plans we make. We simply offer our work up to him each and every day, and ask him to bless and change it as necessary. | | | |

1 - FLU FOR THE YOUNG & HEALTHY - NEWS ARTICLE AS INTRO (Paris) At least 20 million and perhaps as many as 50 million people died in the 1918-1919 pandemic, the highest toll of any disease in the last century. By some estimates, the 1918 pandemic, called “Spanish flu” in the probably erroneous belief that it began in Spain, infected up to a billion people, which was half the world’s population at the time.
The strain was especially lethal for healthy young adults, killing many of the World War I troops who had survived trench warfare, but leaving the very old and the very young -- the more usual victims of flu -- unscathed.
The reason for this is unclear. One theory is that the immune system reacts differently at various stages of life, and that young people may have been particularly vulnerable to an uncontrolled response by cytokines, the proteins that play a big role in causing inflammation.

COMMENT: It may seem odd to us that the Bible warns that new converts shouldn't be given roles of leadership right away (or maybe we're too anxious to put them to work). We are always thankful for young and involved members to get to work, but pride can be the killer for newly converted leaders in the church (cf. I Timothy 3:6).
2 - LOVELESS COMMITTEES - ONE-LINER God so loved the world that he did not send a committee.
SOURCE: Unknown
COMMENT: Whereas committees can get caught up arguing what to do next, Jesus knew what had to be done and executed the task... er... allowed himself to be executed, so we might live.

NEW TOPIC - CHURCH GOVERNMENT!
Two comical comments about how the necessary evil of committees can slow work down:
1 - CHURCH ON HOLD Outside of traffic there is nothing that holds this country back as much as committees.
2 - CONVENTION QUOTE Everything’s been said, but not everyone’s said it.
SOURCE: President Mischke (WELS President 1979-1993)
COMMENT: It takes a good leader to be able to let people express their opinions and to keep things moving forward, once no new comments and advice are offered.

WALTHER REJECTS EVEN PARTIAL ERROR The Ev. Lutheran Church rejects all fraternal and churchly fellowship with those who reject its confessions in whole or in part.

Two Quotes About the Powerful Gospel and Harmful Teachings
1 - POOR FELLOWSHIP COMPROMISES GOSPEL TEACHING: QUOTE The Lutheran position on church fellowship holds that internal unity is expressed in external church fellowship by faithfulness to the Scriptures’ teaching. A church consistently proclaiming unscriptural teachings is still a Christian church to the extent that elements of the true Gospel are there. (For this reason Lutherans do not proselytize active members of these churches.) The presence of the Gospel in these churches, however, does not negate their false and misleading proclamation. Practicing church fellowship with them would compromise our proclamation of the Gospel. Their false teachings sadly separate us at the altar and in the pulpit from well-meaning Christians in these churches.

2 - THE SPIRIT DOESN'T WORK THROUGH FALSE TEACHINGS We rejoice in the fact that God in His grace and mercy can and does awaken, sustain, and preserve believers also in the midst of erring congregations and church bodies. I Kings 19:18. We remember, however, that he does so not through the errors that are taught and condoned there, but only through the true Gospel message that is still heard in these erring churches.

COMMENT: Both of these quotes rejoice in the power of the Gospel and the presence of faith, even in churches that err. But they also place the blame for broken fellowship right where it belongs, on the ones who introduce false teachings. The church that rejects outward acts of fellowship isn't guilty, because they are simply expressing how the heart of fellowship has already been broken by the introduction of harmful teachings by those who claim to be brothers.
