Bible / History / OT / Garden of Eden - Fictional Lilith in Eden

Lilith is not a historical figure. In Semitic mythology she was... cast out of Eden for refusing to submit to Adam and then replaced by Eve. This Lilith myth found a place in some pre-Christian Jewish literature. As you know, this literature does not have a place in the Old Testament and was never accepted by most Jews.

Bible / History / OT / False Prophets - Crazed Prophet

(Lalogi Camp, Uganda) The LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army), led by self-proclaimed prophet Joseph Kony, has been terrorising northern Uganda for 18 years. The group mutilates its victims and has kidnapped tens of thousands of children, taking them to southern Sudan where they are forced to become fighters, porters and sex slaves.

Fear of abduction, killing and mutilation by rebels has forced farmers to abandon their fields. “They have no way to cultivate their land, because if the rebels catch you far away from the camp and the soldiers you are finished,” Omaro said. “All civilians are now their enemies.”

Comment: Self-acclaimed prophets have led to all sorts of atrocities in the history of man; in the Old Testament, they led people to sacrifice their children; here they sacrifice other people’s children.

Bible / History / OT / The Fall - The Fall of NASA’s Genesis

A recent irksome reminder that even the smallest item can bring down a major space mission was the crash of NASA's Genesis return capsule. It slammed into the Utah desert last September. The craft's science canister was badly beat up and solar samples spoiled when parachutes did not open.

It was later discovered that tiny but critical G-switches on the return capsule -- designed to monitor deceleration forces during the plunge through Earth's atmosphere -- were installed the wrong way around. That being the case, the devices were unable to set into action small explosive charges to toss out a set of parachutes.

Comment: "Genesis" "Fall"? Many think of the consequences of the Biblical Fall in Genesis as something unbalanced... one fruit is worth death and damnation? Even scientists recognize that one small mistake can send a project hurtling to its destruction and soiling the results. Morality and holiness are more perfect than any science. Any deviation is no longer holiness. Any deviation is no longer in character with being children of God.

Thank God, Jesus was willing to take the Fall for us, to give us back what we had lost.

Bible / History / OT / The Fall - The Fall As a Business Transaction

Let us think how this [the Fall] would be in modern times. Let us imagine that God is the owner of a large company. Adam is the president and Eve is the vice president of this company. In no uncertain terms, God, the owner, tells Adam and Eve not to sell any stock. The broker, who is the devil, tells Eve that actually selling the stock, is the only smart thing to do. Instead of discussing it with the president or the owner, as would be done in normal business practices, Eve goes against the owner’s wishes and sells. She also convinces Adam, the president, to do the same thing. In actual business, we can understand how upset the owner would be. He would have perfect right to fire his unfaithful employees. By not following God’s wishes, Adam and Eve were saying that they didn’t want to be under God.

Comment: If only it were just a business transaction... instead it was a moral choice of who will govern the heart. We still wrestle with that question every day.
